A Spooky Experiment
The Haunted Mansion has been an on-and-off fixation for the better half of the last two decades. One of the pivotal events in the flowering of this obsession occurred with the re-release of 1969’s A Spooky Night in Disney’s Haunted Mansion in 1998. It was the first time in a generation that the music, atmosphere, and voices of this masterpiece of design were available to the general public. I still remember how exciting it was to finally have a recording of the attraction’s signature Organ music, and experience the Mansion (if only aurally) for an extended period of time. This was still a year away from the 30th Anniversary soundtrack and several more before getting source recordings was as easy as a Google search.
Still, there were a couple of details that were a little… off. “Mike and Karen” were an unexpected bit of radio drama, but the most jarring change was Paul frees replacement by Pete Rendoudet as the Ghost Host. Pete does a fine job, but Paul’s performance is a singularity in the history of themed attractions (if not Entertainment history in general). I decided to set things “right” and restore Mr. Frees to his proper place and this album is the result.
