“If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?”“
Fortunately for all concerned, Spring hasn’t missed yet — much to the relief, no doubt, of Percy Bysshe Shelley, who wrote the lines to conclude his poem, ‘Ode to the West Wind.’
Spring, sometimes termed the vernal equinox (an expression satisfactory to meteorologists but lousy for lovers), is that wonderful time of year when grass starts getting green, tulips thrive, buds appear on the fragile limbs of trees, swallows return to Capistrano, kites appear over telephone poles, vacant lots abound with small boys playing ball, pony-tails replace parkas and an enormous parade is held in New York to celebrate Easter.

Spring has long been a ripe subject for poets, ever since the great Geoffrey Chaucer began his immortal “Canterbury Tales” with. . .
“When that Aprille with his shoures soote
The droghte of Marche hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour . . .”
(The foregoing are not typographical errors — that’s the way they spelled in those days!)
Chaucer continued to explain that come Spring, folks long to go on a pilgrimage. In Olde England they trekked to Canterbury. Today, the pilgrimage is more likely to see the opening game at Yankee Stadium or to a nearby stream to test the tenets of Izaak Walton.
Most people agree that they feel more energetic each Spring but it has remained for the poets to put this ebullience and effervescence into words. Here is what some of the “great poets” have written about springtime:

A box where sweets compacted lie.”

Shakespeare often referred to Spring. In “Two Gentlemen From Verona” there is the line, “Oh how this spring of love resembleth the uncertain glory of an April day.” In “Hamlet” one is “as flush as May.” And in his third sonnet, “Thou art thy mother’s glass, and she in thee calls back the lovely April of her prime . . .”
And of course there is Robert Browning’s, “Oh to be in England, now that April’s there.”

Even Mark Twain had something to say about Spring. He once stated, “There is a sumptuous variety about the New England weather . . . In the Spring I have counted 136 different kinds of weather in 24 hours.
Now, Tutti Camarata presents a selection of Spring favorites as bright and perky as an Easter hat and as fresh as a May breeze off the lake.
Included are two songs by Richard Rodgers — “Spring Is Here,” and “It Might As Well Be Spring.” Also getting the lush Camarata treatment are “Poinciana,” “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year” and “I’ll Remember April.”
Happy Valley Farm, Fun and Fancy Free
Two of the melodies, “April In Paris” and “Paris In The Spring,” are enough to make any amorous listener hop the first flight for France.
Completing the album are the ever-popular, “Spring Romance,” “Spring Madness” and “No Other Love.”
